Trump Government Administrative Directive Endangers Millions of American Jobs and Billions in GDP; Surfrider Foundation assessment reveals financial effect of offshore oil drilling

SAN CLEMENTE, Calif. May 1: The Trump government has recently revealed policies to develop offshore oil drilling in U.S. waters. This is likely to jeopardize recreation, travel, fishing and other shoreline businesses, which give over 1.4 million professions as well as $95 billion GDP near the Atlantic coastline alone. The administrative directive instructs the Interior Department to expand a new five-year oil and gas leasing system to deliberate on new regions for offshore drilling. The directive also prevents the formation of fresh countrywide marine reserves and directs an evaluation of all prevailing sanctuaries and marine monuments designated or extended in the preceding ten years.
"Our ocean, waves and beaches are vital recreational, economic and ecological treasures that would be polluted by an increase in offshore oil drilling, regardless of whether or not there is a spill," revealed Dr. Chad Nelsen, CEO of the Surfrider Foundation, adding, "With today's action, the Trump administration is putting the interests of the oil and gas lobby over the hundreds of communities, thousands of businesses, and millions of citizens who rely on the ocean and coasts for their jobs and livelihoods."
Fresh offshore drilling would endanger thousands of miles of shoreline and billions in GDP, for a comparatively small quantity of oil. Ocean travel and amusement, valued at a projected $100 billion yearly countrywide, delivers 12 times the volume of employments to the U.S. budget, contrasted to offshore oil production. Even in the best-case situation, America's offshore oil assets would deliver only around 920 days, or 18 months source of oil at the present degree of use, as stated by federal agency estimations.
"Tourism drives our local economy, and the approval of offshore drilling poses a huge threat to the livelihood and quality of life in our beach community," stated Nicole D.C. Kienlen, Tourism Director of Bradley Beach, New Jersey, adding, "The effects would be devastating on multiple levels."
Even when there are no calamities, offshore oil drilling extremely contaminates the water and food source at each phase. The ground infiltration, the boring, the rigs, and the transport freighters all discharge poisonous chemicals and leaked oil. The normal method of drilling discharges thousands of gallons of contaminated water into the sea. High intensities of metals have been discovered around drilling platforms in the Gulf of Mexico and have been revealed to amass in fish, mussels and other seafood.
"The Trump administration wants to pour money in to a sinking ship with relatively small return, instead of supporting growth industries like coastal tourism and renewable energy that are adding jobs to our economy," stated Pete Stauffer, Environmental Director for the Surfrider Foundation, adding, "We will stand up for what's best for the nation, and our oceans, by fighting new offshore drilling off our coasts."
The Surfrider Foundation is a non-profit public group devoted to the fortification of the globe's seas, waves and seashores by means of an effective activist network. Originated in 1984 by a few of far-sighted surfers in Malibu, California, the Surfrider Foundation now sustains over 500,000 groups, activists and followers, with over 80 volunteer-led sections and 60 clubs in the U.S., and over 400 successes guarding the shorelines of America.
