Cincinnati Optometrist Group Adds Dry Eye Clinic

CINCINNATI, OHIO, USA, March 23: Madeira Optical has expanded their dry eye treatment options and added a dry eye clinic with the first full year in 2023. The practice has long treated symptoms of dry eye, but when the FDA approved intense pulsed light or IPL for treatment of dry eye, Madeira Optical decided to expand their capabilities and add a Marco EPI-C® IPL with additional low level light therapy options, or LLLT. In addition, the Madiera Optical team added the OCULUS Keratograph 5M®. The new dry eye clinic is now open for clinical treatment. The EPI-C®, similar to the well established Eye Light in Europe, is an (intensive pulse light) IPL and low-level light therapy (LLLT), which combines light modulation with OPE. Eye-Light® simultaneously treats the lower and upper eyelids with direct and indirect applications and has the added benefit of not needing the application of gel during the treatment process, thanks to the patented and unique cooling module. IPL is an FDA approved therapy that treats the Meibomian glands. Applied on periorbital and cheekbone areas, it was verified by various neurological studies that the emission of high-power light impulses leads to a stimulation of neurotransmitters. These solicit the Meibomian glands to produce, contracting, a higher secretion thus increasing the natural lipid flow which reduces tears evaporation. The LLLT mask utilizes medical grade LEDs for light modulation, a photobiomodulation technology that stimulates the production of ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate) by emitting a specific wavelength of light. It also significantly warms the eyelids to temperatures recommended for periorbital heat treatment. The increase in cellular action that triggers endogenous heat combined with the external thermal heating helps stimulate the normalization of the glands. This technology has been used in medicine for over 10 years but only until recently did doctors discover its benefit for periocular inflammatory conditions. The company said the deal valued at an initial order of US$ 10 million is for developing a fleet of electric vessels ranging from 7.3-meter electric cabin cruisers to 23.9-meter electric catamarans specifically designed for the Middle East market. The initial deal was signed by the Managing Director of Badr Sultan Group, Ayman Badr Sultan al-Essa, and Sonu Jayan, Chairman of Crown Electric Ships and Boats. The deal was initiated at the recently concluded defense expo, IDEX/NAVDEX 2023 in Abu Dhabi. "The market demand for catamarans and day cruisers has been fulfilled by products developed for the international market. The Middle East market has specific requirements due to high temperatures, humidity, and sea states. Crown Electric Ships and Boats, which has experience in the development of special-purpose electric vessels, including unmanned electric boats for the defense industry, has taken up the challenge of developing sustainable electric vessels specific to the Middle East region," said Ayman Badr Sultan al-Essa. Lekshmi Salaja, vice chairperson of Crown Electric Ships and Boats said that the deal will have a significant impact on sustainability and net zero initiatives in the Middle East region. “A mid-sized cruise ship’s emissions are equal to 1 million cars, and Crown has been developing electric boats from 7 meters up to 23 meters and is moving towards the development of sustainable super yachts," she added. Simple Breathing Exercise Effective in Reducing Anxiety and Improving Mood, Researchers Say

WASHINGTON, DC, March 23:New research has found that a simple controlled-breathing exercise, done for five minutes a day, is an effective way to reduce anxiety and improve mood. Researchers from the Stanford University School of Medicine investigated whether deliberate patterns of breathing for as little as five minutes per day could relieve anxiety and improve well-being. Study participants were divided into three groups, each with a different daily breathing exercise. The exercises differed in the duration and intensity of the inhales and exhales. A fourth group focused awareness on their natural breathing, a practice called mindfulness. All three breathing patterns were found to reduce anxiety and improve well-being over the 28 days of the study. All three exercises were also more effective in reducing anxiety than mindfulness. The positive benefit for the participants increased with the number of days they performed the exercises. The most improvement resulted from the exercise that researchers called “cyclic sighing,” with its extended exhales. It is done by inhaling through the nose, inhaling again even more deeply to fully fill the lungs, then slowly and fully exhaling through the mouth. “Daily 5-minute cyclic sighing has promise as an effective stress management exercise,” according to David Spiegel, M.D., professor of psychiatry at Stanford University School of Medicine and an author of the study, published in Cell Reports Medicine. It is not known exactly how controlled breathing reduces anxiety. Among the possible explanations the researchers suggest is the simple fact that the participants felt good about doing something themselves to relieve their anxiety. “Voluntary breathing exercises can…enhance the general sense of control over one’s internal state, contributing to the increase in positive affect observed,” wrote Spiegel. Other non-drug approaches, such as increasing physical activity and decreasing the amount of time spent on social media, are also known to reduce anxiety. Research has found that exercise is protective against developing anxiety and effective in significantly reducing the symptoms of anxiety. Other research found that limiting the amount of time spent on social media to 30 minutes a day for three weeks significantly decreased anxiety symptoms and improved well-being. These natural approaches to reducing anxiety stand in stark contrast to the sedatives (benzodiazepines) and other anti-anxiety drugs commonly prescribed for anxiety. There are at least 79 research studies showing that anti-anxiety drugs can cause harmful side effects, including increased risk of death, fractures, heart problems, cognitive impairment, amnesia, dementia, impaired driving, sleepwalking, insomnia, depression, hallucinations, aggression, homicidal ideation, suicide – and even anxiety. WARNING: Anyone wishing to discontinue or change the dose of an antianxiety or other psychiatric drug is cautioned to do so only under the supervision of a physician because of potentially dangerous withdrawal symptoms. Anxiety and other unwanted emotional and behavioral symptoms can have physical causes. Unless properly diagnosed, the symptoms could be misdiagnosed and incorrectly treated as a psychiatric disorder. To identify any physical causes, the Citizens Commission on Human Rights (CCHR) recommends a complete physical examination with lab tests, nutritional and allergy screenings, and a review of all current medications. CCHR continues to raise public awareness of the risks of serious side effects and withdrawal symptoms from antianxiety and other psychiatric drugs, so that consumers and their physicians can make fully informed decisions about starting or stopping the drugs. CCHR supports safe and science-based non-drug approaches to mental health. The Citizens Commission on Human Rights was co-founded in 1969 by members of the Church of Scientology and the late psychiatrist and humanitarian Thomas Szasz, M.D., recognized by many academics as modern psychiatry’s most authoritative critic, to eradicate abuses and restore human rights and dignity to the field of mental health. BRISBANE, AUSTRALIA, March 23:When heading into Brisbane city to enjoy an afternoon by the river, the risk of a shark attack may not be front of mind, but the recent increase in bull shark sightings in the Brisbane River has sparked concern for those who use the river for recreational activities. While there have been no reported attacks in the river to date, recent incidents involving bull shark attacks around Australia have highlighted the need for people to be prepared for emergencies with shark awareness and proper first aid training. Brisbane-based first aid training provider, My First Aid Course, is urging river users and pet owners to be first aid ready as bull shark sightings continue to rise in the Brisbane River. “Children and pets may be particularly vulnerable, as they are more likely to play on the edge of the river or fall into the water during recreational activities, and may be perceived by sharks as easier prey,” said a My First Aid Course spokesperson. One incident earlier this year in the Great Barrier Reef involved a young boy who was posing for a fishing photo when he was attacked by a bull shark. Thankfully, he was left unharmed. Bull sharks are known for their aggressive behavior and are among the three most commonly attacking shark species in Australia. While the likelihood of a shark attack is rare, it is important that people using the river for recreational purposes understand the increasing risk and are prepared for any situation. My First Aid Course explains that if someone is attacked by a shark, the first priority is to control the bleeding with firm pressure applied directly on the wound to prevent further blood loss. Leaders of Pro-Cockfighting Campaign in Oklahoma Are Major Traffickers of Animals for Fighting, Say Animal Groups

OKLAHOMA CITY, OKLAHOMA, UNITED STATES, March 22:Animal Wellness Action and SHARK have released a report on the leaders of the so-called Oklahoma Gamefowl Commission (OGC) detailing their unmistakable involvement in the cockfighting industry, providing footage of their gamecock farms, videos touting their marketing efforts and participation at cockfighting derbies, evidence of shipments of gamecocks through the U.S. mails, gamecock price lists, and more. The OGC is backing HB 2530 and SB 1006 to give them relief from Oklahoma’s comprehensive anti-cockfighting law and falsely characterizing their effort as criminal-justice reform effort. “It is understandable that people committed to breaking the law want to repeal the laws they are breaking,” said Wayne Pacelle, president of Animal Wellness Action and the Center for a Humane Economy. “But what is not understandable is why lawmakers would seriously examine legislative ideas from people who exhibit a complete disregard for the law.” There are no Oklahoma criminal justice reform groups, nor any farming or agriculture groups, that have endorsed their legislative campaign. “Cockfighters know they cannot convince lawmakers to legalize staged animal fighting and to overturn a vote of the people,” said Steve Hindi, president of Showing Animals Respect and Kindness (SHARK). “They are pretending to be something they are not, and even making George Santos blush with their tall tales.” SHARK has drone footage of three of the cockfighting farms from the president, vice president and sergeant at arms for the Oklahoma Gamefowl Commission. Animal Wellness also released two videos of other leaders of the OGC appearing in marketing videos made by a Philippines-based cockfighting network. “The problem is not that our anti-cruelty laws are too harsh,” said Drew Edmondson, former Oklahoma Attorney General (1994-2010) and co-chair of the National Law Enforcement Council for Animal Wellness Action. “Rather it’s that cockfighters are exhibiting knowing and reckless disregard for our laws, and some county sheriffs and district attorneys are failing to uphold the law without fear or favor.” SHARK and Animal Wellness Action are continuing to conduct ongoing animal-fighting investigations, revealing that Oklahoma, despite a strong law that establishes felony-level penalties for a range of cockfighting crimes, continues to be the “cockfighting capital of the United States.” From 2004 to 2022, there were only 29 law enforcement actions resulting in the arrest of individuals involved in cockfighting, an average of 1.75 busts a year for 75 of 77 counties in Oklahoma. (Data are not yet available from Oklahoma or Tulsa counties.) There’s not been a single arrest in most of the biggest cockfighting counties in the state, including Atoka, Coal, LeFlore, and McCurtain counties. In fact, there’s not been a single arrest of anyone named in an 87-page dossier assembled by Animal Wellness Action that exposes many of the biggest cockfighters traffickers throughout Oklahoma. The data was assembled by the District Attorneys Council at the request of Oklahoma State Rep. Andy Fugate, D-94, and was obtained by Animal Wellness Action. The organizations have also investigated the leaders of the Oklahoma Gamefowl Commission, which donated $41,250 to 34 sitting House members and nine Senators, with the single largest recipient of contributions being Senator Lonnie Paxton, R-21 ($2,500). Mr. Paxton is the author of SB 1006 to allow counties to cripple penalties in the anti-cockfighting law. Rep. JJ Humphrey has the companion bill, HB 2530, and received $1,000 from the cockfighters’ PAC. “Lawmakers should no more take money from illegal cockfighters than they should from dogfighters, the mob, or narco-traffickers wishing to weaken laws that apply to them,” added Thomas Pool, DVM, MPH, DACVPM, the senior veterinarian with the Animal Wellness Action and a native of Lawton and an OSU veterinary college graduate. From 2016 through 2022, Dr. Pool tracked thousands of illegal shipments of fighting birds from Oklahoma cockfighters to Guam, where he served as territorial veterinarian for 17 years. Dr. Pool is a retired Army Colonel who ran the U.S. Army’s Veterinary Command. A month ago, the Center for a Humane Economy released a comprehensive 63-page report on the links between cockfighting and avian influenza and virulent Newcastle Disease. There have been 15 introductions of vND into the United States since 1950, 10 of which occurred via the illegal smuggling of game cocks across our southern border from Mexico. (Virulent Newcastle disease is endemic in Mexico and all of Latin America.) Just three of those outbreaks cost the federal government more than $1 billion. World’s Largest Travel Membership Club Suspends Membership Sales In Poland Due To Assessment by Local Regulator

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico, March 23: inGroup® International LLC has made the difficult decision to suspend the enrollment of new Members on its website https://www.incruises.com/ who are Polish residents. Additionally, the company has stopped accepting payments from all existing Polish Members. inGroup customers from Poland that have existing travel reservations will not be affected. And existing Members can fully use their Reward Points to book future travel, or they can request a refund. Either way, existing Polish Members will be fully protected and made whole in this decision. This inGroup decision is a consequence of the incorrect assessment of the inCruises® Membership offer by the Polish Office of Competition and Consumer Protection (UOKIK). In March of 2021, the UOKIK published a list of cryptocurrencies they deemed potential frauds. To our surprise, the inCruises Membership offer was included on this list. inGroup has never operated any type of cryptocurrency business. Nevertheless, despite repeated calls to remove our name from this list due to its defamatory nature, the UOKIK refused to acknowledge the correct and legal nature of the inCruises membership business model. In response to this listing, inGroup retained legal counsel in Poland and has engaged with regulators, providing everything that was asked to clear this situation. inGroup’s founders and top executives have spent many hours meeting with government officials to resolve this matter. During these meetings, when it became apparent they could not label us as a cryptocurrency scheme as originally published, they ultimately found an obscure Polish law, unique only to Poland, called a "Consortium or Argentinian Scheme."
