Breakthrough, Climate-Friendly ACs: Winners of the Global Cooling Prize Announced

NEW YORK and NEW DELHI, April 30: A global coalition initiated by the Government of India, Mission Innovation, and RMI announced today the winners of the Global Cooling Prize, an international innovation competition to develop super-efficient and climate-friendly residential cooling solutions. Gree Electric Appliances, Inc. of Zhuhai with partner Tsinghua University; and Daikin with partner Nikken Sekkei Ltd. emerged as the two winners among eight Finalists after shattering the perceived ceiling of performance. These companies have produced prototypes that have five times (5X) less climate impact than standard air conditioning units available in the market today. When scaled, such technologies can prevent 132 GT of CO2 -equivalent emissions cumulatively between now and 2050 and mitigate over 0.5°C of global warming by the end of the century. Congratulating the winners of the competition, Sir Richard Branson, founder of the Virgin Group said: “A market transformation opportunity for the cooling sector is now a reality. As this incredible achievement begins to be recognized and applauded, it’s time for regulators to focus on the policies and standards that will help us bring these technologies to market.” Congratulating the winners of the Prize, Union Minister for Science & Technology, Earth Sciences and Health & Family Welfare, Dr. Harsh Vardhan highlighted the significance of the achievement, stating: "This is an important development and aligns with the objectives of the India Cooling Action Plan that the Government of India officially released in 2019 to bolster our R&D efforts in global climate leadership. We are proud to achieve the outcome that requires far less operational energy, utilizes refrigerants with low or no ozone depletion potential and low global warming potential, and will also be cost-effective at scale." Both winning teams, Gree Electric Appliances, Inc. of Zhuhai with partner Tsinghua University, and Daikin with partner Nikken Sekkei Ltd., achieved more than 5X reduction in climate impact against the baseline unit, meeting the primary criteria of the Prize. The Prize administrators also concluded that whilst both teams' technologies would likely have an initial up-front cost on introduction to the market at two to three times more than the baseline units, lifecycle cost of ownership would be around half that of the baseline unit. This means consumers would experience a simple payback on the higher first cost after just over three years of operation. The administrators also noted that the technologies' ability to better control the indoor environment would provide increased comfort. The other Finalist teams were led by some of the world's largest air conditioner (AC) manufacturers and promising startups from India, China, Japan, the United States, and the United Kingdom. The teams (in alphabetical order) include Barocal Ltd.; Godrej and Boyce Mfg. Co. Ltd. with partner A.T.E; Kraton with partners Infosys, IIT Bombay, and Porus Labs; M2 Thermal Solutions; S&S Design Startup Solutions Pvt. Ltd.; and Transaera with partner Haier. In November of 2019, the eight Finalists were awarded US$200,000 each to develop their prototypes, and showcased a wide range of promising technologies, including smart hybrid designs of vapor-compression designs, evaporative cooling designs, and solid-state cooling technologies that use little or no global warming refrigerants. In August of 2020, amidst the global pandemic, five of the eight Finalist teams successfully developed and delivered two working prototypes of their technology to the designated test locations in India. To demonstrate the performance and scalability of the Finalists' solutions, one prototype from each team was installed and tested under a real-world setting at the Tata New Haven Bahadurgarh site near New Delhi. The second prototype was tested in a sequential manner under controlled conditions at CEPT University in Ahmedabad, India. Finally, the prototypes were sent to Danfoss' National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL)-accredited lab in Chennai, India for an Indian Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (ISEER) test. RMI Chief Executive Officer Jules Kortenhorst highlighted how collaboration across governments, industry, and civil society organizations, resulted in the success of the initiative. "What the Global Cooling Prize demonstrates is that collective effort can help combat our most critical and urgent problems," explained Kortenhorst. "In this decisive decade, let this herald a new era of collaboration to spur innovations and the discovery of viable solutions in the other sectors that are yet to move towards low-carbon, efficient, and clean technologies. Now governments must support industry to bring these climate friendly technologies to market." The Prize Finalists, which collectively produce well over 20% of the world's residential room ACs, are determined to bring them to market within the next few years. Gree Electric Appliances, Inc. of Zhuhai, a winner of the Prize, and Qingdao Haier Air Conditioner Gen Corp. Ltd., a partner of Finalist Transaera Inc., have announced their intention to join in the COP26 "Race to Zero Breakthrough" for the cooling sector. Ms. Dong Mingzhu, chairperson and president of Gree Electric Appliances, Inc. of Zhuhai, stated: "We are pleased that we were selected as a winner of the Prize and we are committed to delivering the Race to Zero Breakthrough for Cooling: to bring to market affordable residential AC units using this new cooling technology (which has 5X lower climate impact than today's units) by 2025." United Way Worldwide Announces Launch of India COVID-19 Relief Fund

ALEXANDRIA, Va., April 30: United Way Worldwide today announced that it has established a relief fund for United Way India to provide immediate assistance in containing the coronavirus and responding to the unprecedented surge in COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations, and deaths. The India COVID-19 Relief Fund will provide immediate assistance in the form of medical equipment for hospitals, including oxygen supplies, ventilators, beds, Bipap Machines and more. The fund will also supply hygiene and food kits for communities to prevent further spread of the virus. As India experiences the world's worst outbreak, United Way India will distribute donations from the Fund to support the most acutely impacted in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Delhi NCR, Uttarakhand, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Odisha and Bihar. Just this week, India reported the biggest single day spike of new COVID-19 cases at 379,000 and more than 200,000 deaths, 3,000 occurring in the past 24 hours alone. These numbers have overwhelmed the healthcare system, particularly in highly populated cities, and is devastating the most vulnerable of the population. "The resurgence of the COVID-19 virus and the devastating impact on India's healthcare system highlights that the fight against the pandemic is far from over, and shows how vulnerable communities are still at risk," said Neeraj Mehta, Interim President and CEO, United Way Worldwide. "I am heartened by the work of the United Way India network and am confident that we can provide much needed critical support to alleviate the suffering of marginalized populations." Over the past year, the United Way India network of seven local United Ways has supported more than five million people affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and provided infrastructure enhancement to more than 100 hospitals in the country. The United Way India network has raised and distributed $60 million in relief funds to more than 60 cities throughout India. Through the work of 100,000 volunteers, over 291,951 food kits have been distributed and more than 555,886 hot meals have been served. Additionally, the United Way India network has provided 146 hospitals with infrastructure reinforcements including additional beds, oxygen concentrators, ventilators and medical supplies, distributed 804,154 N-95 & 3-Ply masks and 346,104 personal protection equipment (PPE) kits. More Australian Retailers Offering 'Buy Now, Pay Later' Options According to Zip

SYDNEY, April 30:It seems Australian shoppers can't get enough of splitting up purchases, with recent research revealing that 5.8 million Australians currently have at least one buy now pay later account. Industry giant, Zip, has more than 2 million customers across Australia and New Zealand on its platform. Earlier in April, more retailers piled into the Zip platform, responding to the growing consumer awareness of and demand for buy now pay later payment options. The latest retailers to join are JB Fi-Fi, The Good Guys and L'Occitane. They join more than 24,000 retail partners across Australia who are already accepting seamless Zip payments. When used wisely, BNPL is a hugely valuable tool for consumers, helping to spread the cost of lumpy purchases without resorting to high-cost credit options. Young shoppers, in particular, are turning their backs on credit cards in favour of buy now, pay later services, which offer incur no interest on purchases. In the month of May, Australians dumped more than 100,000 credit cards, taking the number of cards currently in operation back to levels unseen since 2009. Shoppers can sign-up for Zip Pay or Zip Money and be ready to use the service in just a matter of minutes. If approved, you'll see your available spend and be ready to shop at thousands of store immediately. On the retailer's side of the transaction, businesses are paid in full upfront by Zip, which takes on the consumer credit and risk. Zip says it delivers not only an increase in the average order value but also fewer returns. According to Zip Managing Director and CEO Larry Diamond, the company believe that the opportunity for Zip significantly grows each and every day. "We continue to execute, build momentum, and accelerate the global shift away from the broken and unfriendly credit card, towards a better, fairer digital alternative," said Diamond. Today, the national Sound It Out campaign launches with a new album and resources to help parents and caregivers have meaningful conversations about emotional wellbeing with their middle schoolers. The songs will be available across all major streaming platforms and can be heard on the campaign website at SoundItOutTogether.org, which also offers free expert-vetted resources to guide conversations. The campaign—a collaboration between the Ad Council and Pivotal Ventures, an investment and incubation company created by Melinda Gates—comes at a time when many young people are struggling with isolation and stress caused by the pandemic, on top of the normal pressures of growing up. Sound It Out places an emphasis on reaching parents and caregivers in Black and Hispanic/Latinx communities, which often face the additional trauma of systemic racism and greater challenges in accessing the support they need. Songs, videos and resources will be available in English and Spanish. Inspired by the insight that music can help unlock conversations between middle schoolers and their parents or caregivers, the campaign features exclusive new music and interviews from recording artists KAMAUU, Tobe Nwigwe, Lauren Jauregui and Empress Of. The artists participated in intimate conversations with middle schoolers and their caregivers, facilitated by mental health experts, and translated the kids' emotions and experiences into songs. "The most impressionable minds of any group of people are the minds of children. In America, the most systematically attacked and targeted community is the 'Black' community," said KAMAUU, who wrote and recorded a song inspired by his conversation with Howie, a 14-year-old from New York. "I was drawn to participate and be a part of this project in the name of self-preservation. In doing what I can to help the youth and parents (fathers and mothers), I can help create a better community for myself and for my future children." "Conversations with young people about their emotional health and wellbeing can be difficult, but are critically important, especially during a pandemic that has left many feeling isolated and alone," said Dr. Renee Wittemyer, Director of Program Strategy and Investment for Pivotal Ventures. "The Sound It Out campaign uses the unique power of music to help young people and the adults who care for them find a common language to express these emotions. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, more than half of mental illness begins before age 14 The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports the suicide rate nearly tripled among young people aged 10-14 between 2007 and 2017 A CDC analysis shows that the share of emergency room visits for mental health challenges, like panic and anxiety, increased by 31% among adolescents aged 12-17 during the pandemic, indicating the negative effects of social isolation and lockdowns "The Sound it Out project is a labor of love. FORT COLLINS, Colo., April 29: Archaeologist and National Geographic explorer, Dr. Chris Fisher, and team have launched an online fundraising campaign for the Earth Archive to scan the Amazon Rainforest using Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) technology. The group is working to secure funding via a Kickstarter campaign, which will run through Friday, May 21. Earth Archive will begin scanning the Amazon this summer with regional partners such as Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espacias, Universidade de São Paulo, Mapbiomas, Universidad technológica de Pereira, and many others. U.S. Job Switching Rate Declines by 2.0 Percentage Points Since March 2020; Wages Grew 5.9 Percent Due to Low Wage Job Loss Employment growth dropped by 7.0 percent, though the pace has slowed

ROSELAND, N.J., April 28: U.S. job switching rate declines 2.0 percentage points since the start of the pandemic in March 2020, while wages for U.S. workers grew 5.9 percent over the last year, increasing the average wage level by $1.71 to $30.84 an hour according to the ADP Research Institute® Workforce Vitality Report (WVR) released today. Employment growth demonstrated a continued downward slide by -7.0 percent. The average wage growth is higher than expected as a result of significant job losses among low wage earners, which increased the average. Chart 1: Yearly Wage & Employment Growth – March 2021, according to the ADP Workforce Vitality Report by the ADP Research Institute. "The significance of this data is a pre- and post-pandemic assessment of the labor market, from March 2020 compared to one year later in March 2021," said Nela Richardson, chief economist, ADP. "Our data shows a decline in job switching, pointing to the pandemic's effect on worker sentiment of the job market. This decline in job switching shows workers staying put, perhaps apprehensive to make the switch or rather, embracing existing job opportunities brought on by the pandemic such as promotions and additional responsibilities, likely another reason to hold their current job. As the workforce moves beyond the one-year mark, we'll be keeping a close watch on how job switching behaviors change and evolve as the economy rebounds." Employment growth year-over-year continued a downward slide with -7.0 percent due to COVID-19, yet at a slightly slower pace than we have seen in past months. Individual industry employment trends were unchanged with leisure and hospitality remaining as the hardest hit and the finance industry the least impacted. Additionally, the leisure and hospitality and trade sectors both show larger wage growth over other sectors, due to greater loss of low wage job in these sectors. Job switching in the finance sector declined by 2.0 percentage points, whereas leisure and hospitality declined by almost 4.0 percentage points. This practically double percentage point drop in job switching is due to the significant job loss in leisure and hospitality which limited job opportunities to switch into that industry. The distribution of job switchers across gender remained the same from pre-pandemic to now. While wages for male job switchers were higher overall, wage growth was higher for females. This is indicative of the lower wage levels females currently receive. L-com Releases New Fiber Terminal Boxes, Splitter Distribution Boxes & Rack-Mount Panels

L-com's new fiber enclosure product line addresses FTTx, fiber distribution networks and growing high-speed voice, video and data applications, and are designed to make the field installation as simple as possible. The wall-mount outdoor fiber enclosures in this line feature 24, 48 and 72 simplex SC/UPC couplers (pre-installed) and 0.9mm single-mode pigtails (per port). The routing guides on these products limit bend radius and enhance strain-relief control. They feature a waterproof, IP54 design with gasket seal and secure lid latch. The FTTH terminal boxes and fiber information panels include 4 and 8 terminal boxes with SC/UPC and SC/APC couplers and pigtails. The information panels are offered in multimode and single-mode models with 2-port optical fibers. This line also includes 16-port splitter distribution boxes. L-com's fiber patch panels and rack-mount fiber enclosures feature space-saving 1U 19" SC and LC patch panels in multimode and single-mode options with D-ring management card. This line also include 1U, 24 and 48-port rack-mount enclosures. The fiber splitter distribution boxes in the line 8,16 and 24-port options with SC/UPC and SC?APC couplers. They feature a cable management tray designed to securely hold fibers. These boxes are also waterproof with an IP54 design with gasket seal and secure lid latch. ROCHESTER, Mich., April 28: Foresight Research -- A new report shows how the pandemic affected bank and credit union satisfaction – check it out. Foresight Research surveyed over 11,000 banking customers and credit union members in 44 markets to find out how the pandemic is affecting consumer satisfaction and financial institution switching. During the pandemic, satisfaction tanked in many areas. This does not seem surprising considering that many lobbies were closed or had limited hours. This report measures a total of 16 specific measures of expectations and satisfaction. Some of the banking relationship metrics (friendly personnel or handling problems) – high priorities for customers and members tanked. To make matters worse, digital banking satisfaction also dropped significantly likely due to increased usage during the pandemic. But there is a ray of sunlight – expectations. Importantly, expectations dropped twice as much as satisfaction on many customer experience metrics. It seems that banking customers and credit union members were empathic about their financial institution. They know the pandemic was hard on everybody – including banks and credit unions. The result - overall satisfaction was stable – perhaps reflecting "we are all in this together". That said- not all is well. The percentage of customers and members intending to switch their primary financial institution doubled –from 12% (over two years) prior to the pandemic to 22% expected churn in the next year or two. A lot of banking consumers will be in play – like in the tens of millions. Why? I It was all about financial issues like interest rates and fees. Seems reasonable given the high rates of under employment and the uncertain future. How long this lasts is still to be determined.
