Chemical Activity Barometer Falls In August

WASHINGTON, Aug. 31: The Chemical Activity Barometer (CAB), a leading economic indicator created by the American Chemistry Council (ACC), fell 0.5% in August on a three-month moving average (3MMA) basis following steadily easing gains in May, June and July. On a year-over-year (Y/Y) basis, the barometer rose 12.5% in August (3MMA). The unadjusted data show a 1.6% decline in August after flat readings in July and June. The diffusion index eased to 82% in August. The diffusion index marks the number of positive contributors relative to the total number of indicators monitored. The CAB reading for July was revised downward by 0.53 points and the reading for June was revised downward by 0.33 points. The August data are provisional and subject to revision. "The latest CAB reading is consistent with expansion of commerce, trade and industry, but clearly growth has peaked, with slower growth ahead." said Kevin Swift, chief economist at ACC. The CAB has four main components, each consisting of a variety of indicators: 1) production; 2) equity prices; 3) product prices; and 4) inventories and other indicators. In August, production-related indicators were up slightly. Trends in construction-related resins and related performance chemistry improved. Resins and chemistry used in other durable goods increased. Plastic resins used in packaging and for consumer and institutional applications showed gains. Performance chemistry for industry was solid and exports grew. Equity prices declined amid geopolitical uncertainty and fears about the Delta variant. Product and input prices expanded. Inventory and other supply chain indicators were positive. The CAB is a leading economic indicator derived from a composite index of chemical industry activity. Due to its early position in the supply chain, chemical industry activity has been found to consistently lead the U.S. economy's business cycle, and the barometer can be used to determine turning points and likely trends in the broader economy. Month-to-month movements can be volatile, so a three-month moving average of the CAB reading is provided. This provides a more consistent and illustrative picture of national economic trends. Applying the CAB back to 1912, it has been shown to provide a lead of two to 14 months, with an average lead of eight months at cycle peaks as determined by the National Bureau of Economic Research. The median lead was also eight months. At business cycle troughs, the CAB leads by one to seven months, with an average lead of four months. The median lead was three months. The CAB is rebased to the average lead (in months) of an average 100 in the base year (the year 2012 was used) of a reference time series. The latter is the Federal Reserve's Industrial Production Index. The CAB comprises indicators relating to the production of chlorine and other alkalies, pigments, plastic resins and other selected basic industrial chemicals; chemical company stock data; hours worked in chemicals; publicly sourced, chemical price information; end-use (or customer) industry sales-to-inventories; and several broader leading economic measures (building permits and new orders). Each month, ACC provides a barometer number reflecting activity data for the current month, as well as a three-month moving average. The CAB was developed by the Economics Department at ACC. Current-month, unadjusted readings of the CAB are based on high-frequency weekly and daily data. For example, we use equity data as of the Thursday before the release date. Using mid-month data can lead to large revisions if conditions appreciably change in the second half of the month. We have moved the release dates for the CAB to the last Tuesday of each month. AAOS releases new trends and outcomes reports from the American Joint Replacement Registry and the Shoulder & Elbow Registry

ROSEMONT, Ill., Aug. 31: The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) Registry Program is pleased to announce the availability of two new clinical data reports – the American Joint Replacement Registry Program (AJRR) 2020 Annual Report Supplement and the Shoulder & Elbow Registry (SER) 2020 Annual Report. The reports, which were released during the AAOS 2021 Annual Meeting in San Diego, offer actionable information to guide physicians and patient decision making to improve care. "There's great momentum across the AAOS family of registries," said William J. Maloney, MD, FAAOS, chair of the AAOS Registry Oversight Committee. "The number of anatomical areas and procedures covered continues to grow and the data being submitted by participating sites is paving the way for improved orthopaedic outcomes in the United States. We are pleased to publish these clinical insights from the AJRR and the SER and look forward to seeing continued growth and increasingly impactful analyses in the years ahead." AJRR 2020 Annual Report Supplement Data presented in the 2020 AJRR Annual Report Supplement were submitted to the AJRR by 1,110 institutions through June 2020, covering procedures from 2012 to 2019. For the second consecutive year, the supplement includes reporting of device-specific cumulative percent revision estimates, drawn from the registry's unique linkage with Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) claims data. In addition, analyses in the 2020 supplement were expanded to include many more devices than the 2019. This year's analysis also examines cumulative, all-cause revision at target timepoints with further stratification of devices based on fixation and bearing descriptions. This report found all hip device constructs included in analysis had a cumulative percent revision of less than 2.7% at one year and less than 4.6% at final follow-up for each respective device. Knee device constructs included in analysis were found to have less than 2.5% cumulative percent revision at three years and less than 3.7% at final follow-up for each respective device Shoulder & Elbow Registry Second Annual Report The SER includes representatives from the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES), the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM), the Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA), and the American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH). The SER collects shoulder and elbow procedural data in the United States to establish survivor curves, track revisions, and support orthopaedic care and best practices. The program's latest annual report represents submitted shoulder and elbow procedures dating from 2015 through 2020. "The AAOS Shoulder and Elbow Registry is one of the most important endeavors being undertaken in shoulder and elbow surgery," said SER Steering Committee member Stephane F. Brockmeier, MD, FAAOS. "This data will drive future clinical care, answer critical questions and contribute to research in the field, and dramatically enhance our ability to provide optimal outcomes for our patients. As can be seen in the 2020 SER Annual Report, the Registry data continues to accumulate at a rapid pace, and new procedures are added for study each year." To date, there are more than 112 SER participating facilities including hospitals, private practices, and ambulatory surgical centers spanning 35 states across the United States. Dominica's Citizenship by Investment Programme Receives Perfect Score for Certainty of Product in FT PWM Report

LONDON, Aug. 29:In the latest 2021 CBI Index, the Commonwealth of Dominica's Citizenship by Investment (CBI) Programme was the only one to be awarded a perfect score for its Certainty of Product pillar. The annual report evaluates operating CBI programmes, an initiative that grants citizenship to those that can make a qualifying investment, using nine pillars as a form of measurement. The Certainty of Product pillar uses five features to determine a programme's ranking. These include longevity, stability, reputation, adaptability and popularity and renown. As one of the oldest programmes on the market, Dominica continues to be a trusted product and a popular option amongst investors. The programme has stood the test of time and has evolved to meet the changing demands of clients. This marks the second year Dominica's CBI Programme has received full marks for its Certainty of Product, making it the only one to do so. Vaccine inequity causes ‘dangerous divergence' in COVID survival rates – UN agency heads

NEW YORK, August 27: The heads of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), World Bank, World Health Organization (WHO) and World Trade Organization (WTO) met with the leaders of the African Vaccine Acquisition Trust (AVAT), Africa CDC, Gavi and UNICEF to rapidly scale-up vaccines in low- and lower middle-income countries, particularly in Africa. “These countries, the majority of which are in Africa, simply cannot access sufficient vaccine to meet even the global goals of 10 per cent coverage in all countries by September and 40 per cent by end 2021, let alone the African Union's goal of 70 per cent in 2022”, the UN officials said. Vaccine inequity A crisis of vaccine inequity is driving a “dangerous divergence” in COVID-19 survival rates and in the global economy, the agency heads stated, expressing gratitude for “the important work” of AVAT and COVAX in trying to address the “unacceptable situation”. However, they warned, “effectively tackling this acute vaccine supply shortage in low- and lower middle-income countries, and fully enabling AVAT and COVAX, requires the urgent cooperation of vaccine manufacturers, vaccine-producing countries, and countries that have already achieved high vaccination rates”. Reaching targets To ensure that all countries achieve the global goals of at least 10 per cent coverage by September, and 40 per cent by the end of the year, the top UN Officials called on countries that have contracted high volumes of vaccines to “swap near-term delivery schedules with COVAX and AVAT”. They also advised vaccine manufacturers to “immediately prioritize and fulfill” their contracts to COVAX and AVAT, and to provide regular, clear supply forecasts. Moreover, the UN agency chiefs urged G7 industrialized nations and all dose-sharing countries to “fulfill their pledges urgently” with enhanced pipeline visibility, product shelf life and support for ancillary supplies – as barely 10 per cent of the nearly 900 million committed doses have yet to be shipped. “We call on all countries to eliminate export restrictions and any other trade barriers on COVID-19 vaccines and the inputs involved in their production”, the statement continued. World's health ‘at stake' In parallel, the UN agencies are intensifying their work with COVAX and AVAT to tackle persistent vaccine delivery, manufacturing and trade issues, notably in Africa. They are mobilizing grants and concessional financing to support this work. “We will also explore financing mechanisms to cover future vaccine needs as requested by AVAT…[and] advocate for better supply forecasts and investments to increase country preparedness and absorptive capacity”, they assured. The UN agency heads upheld that they would also continue to enhance data, identify gaps and improve transparency in the supply and use of all COVID-19 tools. “The time for action is now. The course of the pandemic – and the health of the world – are at stake”, the statement concluded.
