Begging bowls for Kolkata doctors says Bangladeshi leader

Against the backdrop of the strained relations between India and Bangladesh with the minority Hindu community being persecuted brutally, a Bangladeshi BNP leader's bizarre remarks that doctors in West Bengal would be forced to take to the streets with begging bowls in the absence of Bangladeshi patients have evolved strong reactions from Kolkata based doctors. A number of doctors have rubbished the claims made by the Bangladeshi leader saying that it would only have an adverse impact on the Bangladeshis patients who flock to the city hospitals in large numbers to get specialised treatment. With Bangladesh lacking a suitable medical infrastructure to cater to the comprehensive treatment of its nationals, the comments by the BNP leader is totally misleading. With the Government of India imposing severe restrictions on issuing visas to citizens of the neighbouring country, the number of patients from Bangladesh coming to Kolkata for medical assistance has sharply declined and a majority of the city doctors are not showing any signs of disappointment but have taken a bold stance saying that people who torture minorities in the country and disrespect the Indian tricolor should be stunned by the medical fraternity in Kolkata. It would be naive of Bangladesh to assume that the absence of Bangladeshi patients in Kolkata hospitals would leave the doctors in a state of anguish and compel them to plead with the Bangladeshis to travel to Kolkata for treatment. Although scores of Bangladeshis travel to India for treatment in Kolkata hospitals which in comparison to the medical facilities available in the country are much superior and affordable, this does not imply that the medical system in Kolkata would suffer a big setback. Kolkata doctors on the other hand say that instead of roaming around in the streets of Kolkata with begging bowls they would go on with their business as usual as there is enough patients in the city who need their attention and care and they would be in a better position to serve them well. The persistent attempt by Bangladesh to establish the point that they can take care of the medical requirements of its citizens once they stop coming to India and Kolkata in particular is just  another  ploy by the present Yunus regime to undermine the significant contributions  India has made when Bangladesh needed them most in their times of crises.
