COVID-19 Pandemic Triggers 72% Ransomware Growth, Mobile Susceptibility Grow 50%

SAN JOSE, California, July 21, 2020 :Skybox® Security, a worldwide pioneer in cybersecurity management, today published the mid-year update to its 2020 Vulnerability and Threat Trends Report. The report assesses the susceptibility, exploits and danger in place over the first half of a year dominated by the confusion linked to the COVID-19 pandemic. The report, prepared by Skybox® Research Lab, attempts to assist organizations align their security tactic with the reality of the prevailing threat landscape.
Chief findings from the report include:
  • 20,000+ new vulnerability reports forecast for 2020, breaking earlier records
  • 50% rise in mobile susceptibility showcases threat of blurring line between corporate and personal networks
  • Ransomware flourishes during COVID-19 pandemic, with new samples expanding by 72%
  • Assaults on crucial infrastructure, including healthcare organisations and research labs, have added to the confusion.
"The global COVID-19 pandemic has completely reshaped the way that organizations and their employees work," revealed Ron Davidson, VP of R&D and CTO for Skybox Security. "With the majority of the workforce now working remotely, the network perimeter has significantly widened – securing this perimeter now needs to be a top strategic priority. Organizations need to be able to identify the flaws that sit within both personal and professional devices. They also need to be able to model their expanded network so that they can understand all potential attack vectors. If they do not have these capabilities, then they will not be able to manage the mass of 20,000 new vulnerabilities, leaving them vulnerable to attack; something that they cannot afford at a time of global financial uncertainty."
Also vital in the report is the growth of ransomware's popularity, with the number of fresh samples expanding by 72% over the first half of the year.
Sivan Nir, Threat Intelligence Team Leader for Skybox Security, speaking on this rise observed, "We observed 77 ransomware campaigns during the first few months of the pandemic – including several on mission-critical research labs and healthcare companies. The focus and the capability of attackers is clear: they have the means to impart serious financial and reputational harm on organizations. The need for focused remediation strategies that are informed by full network visibility and contextual, data-rich intelligence has never been more pressing."
The report additionally shows that the volume of mobile susceptibility has grown by 50 percent. This rise is completely propelled by new Android deficiencies (which increased by 110 percent from 230 last year to 484 this year), after the number of new iOS susceptibility declined by 23 percent from 152 to 117. In earlier years such a growth may not have worried security experts, but after COVID-19 pandemic blurred the line between corporate and domestic zones it underscores the significance of securing all probable access points.
In a bid to weather the COVID-19 pandemic and the ensuing new threat landscape, organizations require to incorporate precise, up-to-date threat intelligence into their vulnerability management tactics. Skybox's attitude offers a systematic procedure where susecptibilities are discovered on a regular basis; prioritized in the context of the network, assets and dangers; and remediated or lessened in accordance with the peril they pose. Such an endeavour is crucial to being proactive against present day perils and adaptive to the volume of fresh dangers yet to come.

Yogajog Bhawan , Administrative Office of Postal Department Gripped by Fear as two test Positive for Covid 19

Kolkata, July 13 : With the Covid 19 cases in West Bengal reaching the 30,000 mark and a number of employees of both private as well as government offices being affected by the virus, authorities of several private and government offices have decided to keep their organisations open. While a top executive of a private company who refused to be named told this correspondent that they had decided to keep their offices open restricting the area of operation so that the employees are not exposed to the threat of Covid 19.Another key official who enjoys a prestigious position in a private organisation observed that employees above the age of 50 were asked to work in limited numbers while the majority of the work were being carried out by employees below the age of 50. Ironically Yogayog Bhavan in Kolkata which is the administrative office of the Bengal circle under the aegis of the Postal Department of India has asked all employees irrespective of their ages to report for work. This despite the fact that two employees of Yogayog Bhavan, Kolkata tested positive for Covid 19 within a short span of time. After the first Covid 19 case was detected at Yogayog Bhavan the authorities decided to keep the office shut for two days for fumigation and sanitizing the office. But when the second employee with Covid 19 was detected today the authorities decided to keep the office open. This has made the employees panicky and scared and has exposed them to the threat of the dreaded Covid 19 virus. An employee whom this correspondent met was visibly shaken following the incident and expressed her helplessness at the turn of events. Expressing apprehension she said that it was rather strange that the authorities have decided to keep the office open despite being aware of the fact that the virus is extremely contagious in nature. A city doctor who is a virologist explained once a person in an office is affected and the administration does not intervene and decides to keep the entire office open this could lead to disastrous consequences. He further added that while some sections needs to be closed to limit the area of operation and curb the spread of the virus keeping an entire office open under such circumstances was alarming.
