National Cleanliness Day: Persisting to Back the Government’s Swachh Bharat Mission

 New Delhi, Delhi, India

JICA commemorates National Cleanliness Day on January 30th 2020, by persisting to back the Government’s Swachh Bharat Mission.
The National Cleanliness Day is a nationwide programme which targets at enhancement and increasing consciousness on the necessity of cleanliness. Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) which has contributed in upkeeping of cleanliness via its schemes celebrated the National Cleanliness Day on January 30, 2020. Since 2014, annually on National Cleanliness Day is observed in an endeavour to maintain the hygiene and sanitation conditions. The sanitation coverage was simply 40% in 2014, which grew to 80% in 2018 with the endeavors of the Government of India. Although there is a great enhancement in the sanitation but there still remains a gap which requires to be tackled.

From the previous 30 years, JICA has been closely functioning with the Government of India and backing India's water and sanitation segment via ODA loans, technical cooperation, and grants. The key program of Clean India Movement (Swachh Bharat Mission) commenced in 2014. To fortify its endeavors, JICA undertook the ‘Survey on Toilet 2015' so as to comprehend the causes for defecating in the open, and further worked on Consciousness programs to enlighten the general populace.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Katsuo Matsumoto, Chief Representative, JICA India observed, “Cleanliness is not just limited to building infrastructure, but is also aimed at bringing about behavioral change. Which is why the projects of JICA has an underlying component of educating the people, building awareness and encouraging maintenance of the projects. Thus, we have built avenues to educate the masses and bring about a change in their mindset.”

JICA has sponsored a total of 25 water and sanitation schemes in India, disbursing ODA loans worth 752 billion Japanese Yen (nearly INR 44,300 Crore)
In this regard, the JICA-sponsored Kolkata Solid Waste Management Improvement Project (KSWMIP) has improved public consciousness via street drama and lectures in school as it is essential to increase public Consciousness around SLWM practices, and its best to learn such practices, at a young age. The scheme targets at segregation of waste and has contributed in composting biodegradable waste at the compost plants and increasing more recycling. In the scheme, one of India's foremost sanitary landfill locations was constructed and steps are also in place to preserve ground water quality within 50m of the landfill site periphery.

Apart from this, JICA has backed the Government of India’s endeavour in cleaning of river Yamuna under Yamuna Action Plan (YAP) in Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi in addition to Ganga Action Plan (GAP) in Varanasi Presently ongoing YAP-II in Delhi would treat 950.7 MLD of waste water in Kondli, Rithala and Okhla area besides providing for sewage network. The aim of YAP and GAP schemes is to enhance water quality of the rivers, thereby increasing sewage treatment system capability with construction and rehabilitation of the sewerage system.

Another such example is that of “Mottainai Grandma”, Japanese children picture book from Kodansha that has been locally published by National Book Trust (NBT) with the backing of JICA in India. Approximately 25,000 copies of book has already been printed. The book tries to guide children in respecting the resources and not to waste without good care and consideration. The word "Mottainai” means "what a waste" in Japanese and the book lays stress on 4Rs – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Respect. JICA comprehends the necessity of instilling good practices of cleanliness and hygiene at a young age and thus teach the children thoughtful waste management.

JICA in India is also backing Taisei Kougyou Co., Ltd., a Japanese organisation working towards waste water treatment expertise called Taisei Soil System (TSS) containing exclusive soil infiltration processing material “Tafgard”. The system has benefits in little to no discharge and electricity use, high treatment capability, low expense and effortless maintenance that is being exhibited in Uttar Pradesh for community toilet and school toilet. JICA is expediting installation of sustainable sewage treatment facilities for toilets via Taisei Kougyou Co., Ltd., thereby enhancing proper sanitation and hygiene best practices.
About JICA

Founded, by a particular law, as an independent administrative establishment under the Government of Japan, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) targets to contribute to the enhancement of international cooperation, as a sole Japanese governmental agency in control of ODA execution. JICA is the globe's leading bilateral donor agency. JICA functions as a link between Japan and emerging nations, and furnishes assistance in forms of loan, grant and technical cooperation so that the emerging nations can fortify their capabilities.

SMA and Infineon Decrease System Expenses for Inverters

Niestetal, Munich, Germany

The installed photovoltaic capability is expanding swiftly globally. Photovoltaic systems with a total output of approximately 600 GW presently supply clean and cost-effective electricity – substituting around 600 medium-sized coal-fired power plants.
SMA Solar Technology AG (SMA) and Infineon Technologies AG (FSE: IFX / OTCQX: IFNNY) back this expansion trend with the recent generation of novel silicon carbide (SiC)-based solar inverters. The novel semiconductor material diminishes the system expenses for inverters and enhances their competence. The production expenses for solar power are thus further diminished.

With the Sunny Highpower PEAK3 from SMA, obtainable since 2019, decentralized photovoltaic power plants can be planned flexibly and effectively up to the megawatt range. The basis for this is the compact design designed for 1500 VDC, which generates an output of 150 kW per unit. This is made possible by SiC expertise from Infineon: Six power modules of the type CoolSiC™ EasyPACK™ 2B and 36 gate drivers of the EiceDRIVER™ family 1ED20 transform the direct current generated by the solar cells into grid-compatible alternating current - with an effectiveness of over 99 percent.

Silicon carbide provides benefits for the overall system

"Silicon carbide enables us to build the inverters compact, powerful and reliable," observed Sven Bremicker, Head of Technology Development Center at SMA. "In the Sunny Highpower PEAK3, the CoolSiC modules almost double the particular output from 0.97 to 1.76 kW/kg. Because  of the compact design, the inverters are much easier to transport and much faster to install." The benefits of a decentralized plant layout can thus be integrated with those for central inverters. Growths are effortless possible even after the photovoltaic power plant has been commissioned.

"SiC-based power semiconductors are more expensive than silicon solutions," commented Dr. Peter Wawer, President of the Industrial Power Control Division of Infineon. "But thanks to the electrical properties of the material, this is more than offset at system level. Higher switching speeds and efficiency allow transformers, capacitors, heat sinks and ultimately packages to be smaller – and thus save system costs. We are very proud to have convinced with SMA the European market leader in photovoltaic inverters of the advantages and to support volume production with our innovative SiC products." Not only photovoltaic systems gain from these benefits. Demand for SiC-based solutions from Infineon is also expanding in other industrial segments and for applications such as non stop power supply and charging infrastructure for electric vehicles.

Swift advancement of customized modules
Infineon has created a client-specific solution for SMA that consists  of both a classic TRENCHSTOP™IGBT and a CoolSiC™ MOSFET with body diode. The ANPC (Active Neutral-Point Clamped) topology permits system voltages up to 1500 V maximum to be switched with switches designed for 1200 V. The topology thus utilizes the benefits of SiC, although only some of the switches in the EasyPACK module are based on it. Overall, the utilization of SiC decreases the complications in the inverter. This not only enhances competence, but also makes the system easier to maintain and increases its service life.

As the worldwide  market pioneer for power semiconductors, Infineon presents the biggest SiC portfolio of Easy modules for industrial applications. Thanks to its numerous years of specialization, the several chip technologies and the obtainable production capabilities, this platform can be adapted to client needs and brought to series production readiness at short notice. Because of the robust growth in demand for SiC discretes and modules, Infineon persists to invest in the expansion of SiC capabilities at its own manufacturing locations.

Businesses Encounter a Digital Ceiling in Their Transformation Advancement, Infosys Digital Radar Shows

DAVOS, Switzerland, Jan. 22: Businesses worldwide encounter a "digital ceiling" when it comes to digital change, as stated in a fresh study from Infosys Knowledge Institute (IKI), the thought leadership and research wing of Infosys, a worldwide pioneer in next-generation digital services and consulting. The research shows that businesses must change their attitude to obtain advanced stages of digital maturity.
Infosys Digital Radar 2020 evaluated the digital transformation endeavors of companies on a Digital Maturity Index and noted year-over-year advancement in fundamental zones, for example digital efforts to enhance a company's capability. However, the majority companies come up against a "digital ceiling" when attempting to obtain the most developed levels of maturity.
The report, which surveyed over 1,000 executives worldwide, positioned the most digitally advanced organisations as "Visionaries", trailed by "Explorers" and then "Watchers."
Companies are aware how to obtain moderate transformation success, with an 18 per cent growth in companies advancing this year from the lowest tier of Watchers to the middle Explorer tier. However, Explorers tried their best to move into the leading Visionary cluster, with the key tier remaining the same, showing a "digital ceiling" to transformation endeavors.
The Visionary cluster remains unchanged in spite of companies reporting fewer obstacles to digital transformation than the previous year. Human, rather than technological, obstacles are presently the most constant, with the two of the top obstacles being the scarcity of talent or skills (34 per cent) and a risk-averse corporate culture (35 per cent).
How to break through the digital ceiling?
The research shows that leading performers break through the digital ceiling since they think differently.
Firstly, successful companies concentrate robustly on people, utilizing digital transformation to make enhancements centred on clients and employees.
The majority of companies (68 per cent) across the spectrum stated functional capability and enhanced productivity as a key transformation goal. But successful companies in the Visionary cluster are specifically encouraged to make enhancements for their employees. Approximately half of Visionaries describe "empowering employees" as a chief business goal for transformation, compared with less than one third of Explorers and less than one fifth of Watchers.
Similarly, Visionaries have an enhanced concentration on client centred endeavors, being considerably more likely than other clusters to undertake transformation to boost client experiences and engagement and in order to react more swiftly to client requirements.
Secondly, successful companies have a unique attitude when it comes to transformation procedures.
Conventional linear transformations result in long transformation timelines, signifying a company's enhancements are obsolete by the time the procedure is complete. Instead, leading performers exhibit a cyclical attitude, executing recurring swift feedback loops to promote transformation and keep updates relevant. The Visionary cluster is far ahead of others in digital endeavors tied to rapid cycles: 75 per cent function at scale in Agile and DevOps, compared with an overall average of 34 per cent for the total survey group.
Businesses overestimate tech obstacles and underestimate the significance of a company's attitude
The significance of culture and a cyclical transformation mindset to breaking through the digital ceiling were underestimated by businesses the previous year.
In the 2019 Digital Radar report, companies were asked to forecast the toughest obstacles to their transformation development for the subsequent year. This year's Infosys Digital Radar 2020 compares these forecasts to the real problems businesses encountered in 2019.
Businesses reported remarkable declines in the influence that technological obstacles have on their transformation advancement, including:
  • Inability to experiment quickly (down 49 per cent);
  • Insufficient budget (down 40 per cent);
  • Cybersecurity challenges (down 40 per cent).
However, businesses made much less advancement against cultural obstacles, including scarcity of change management capabilities (down 7 per cent) and lack of skill (down 6 per cent).
Development across industries and geographies
  • The technology and telecom industries continue to rank highest on the Digital Maturity Index this year.
  • Consumer packaged goods, logistics, and healthcare achieved strong year-on-year improvements. The report's anecdotes from executive interviews suggest that the adoption of telematics, the Internet of Things and smart medical devices contributed to these increases. Likewise, the automotive industry placed fourth by digital maturity and featured the second highest percentage of Visionaries (30 per cent of those surveyed).
  • The insurance industry lags significantly behind other sectors, featuring the highest percentage of Watchers (17 per cent).
  • The digital ceiling was most dramatic in China, where 23 per cent of companies moved from Watcher to Explorer (which rose from 64 per cent to 87 per cent), but the percentage in the Visionary category (8 per cent) remained the same.
Salil Parekh, CEO and MD at Infosys, observed: "We've seen enterprises successfully employ emerging technologies to optimise productivity and efficiency, but struggle at the next stage of digital maturity. Faster, better, and cheaper technology alone will not provide the improvements enterprises need. Our research has shown that companies which can keep pace with digital transformation are those that design digital initiatives to improve customer experiences and empower their employees, differentiating themselves and propelling their business to the most advanced levels of progress."
Jeff Kavanaugh, VP and Global Head at Infosys Knowledge Institute, remarked: "This year's Digital Radar research revealed significant progress across transformation initiatives – however, traditional programme models are not keeping up with the rapid pace of market change and companies face a distinct barrier in reaching top levels of digital maturity.
"The most successful businesses in our survey have an employee focus and a circular transformation mindset, which enable top performers to kick off a virtuous cycle in the company. The result is a "living enterprise" that is constantly sensing, improving, and attuned to its customers and employees. This living enterprise is suited to serving a larger circle of stakeholders – employees, customers, suppliers, local communities, and larger society – not just shareholders."
