National Energy Conservation Day: JICA Backs India's Endeavour for Energy Competence, Shift to Clean Energy

Backing India’s shift to clean energy for sustainable development

New Delhi, Delhi, IndiaJICA commemorates National Energy Conservation day through its dedication to clean energy.
As India is 3rd biggest energy consumer in the globe trailing China and U.S. and is responsible for almost 6% of global energy use as per BP Statistical Review of World Energy 2019, India is one of the top nations for enhancement of global energy conservation. As the nation commemorates the National Energy Conservation Day on December 14, the government of India makes a concerted attempt to conserve energy and shift to renewable sources for example the objective to introduce 175 GW by FY2022 under the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy.

Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has long been associated with the Government of India in energy competence and renewable energy segment towards sustainable progress.

Speaking on the occasion of National Energy Conservation Day, Mr. Katsuo Matsumoto, Chief Representative, JICA India Office, remarked, “India’s energy consumption is growing and energy derived from coal is 57% of the country’s energy mix. The effort to shift from fossil fuel to renewable energy by a large country like India has enormous impact to the world. As India celebrates the National Energy Conservation Day, JICA reaffirms its commitment to wholeheartedly support the country's effort to diversify its energy mix and realize economic growth in a sustainable manner.”

JICA has assisted in installing 9.3 GW energy capability in India with 1.0 GW in the renewable segment. JICA’s assistance on schemes for modernization of transmission and distribution lines has also enhanced energy competence in the nation. JICA has backed transmission and distribution schemes across Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Meghalaya, Odisha and Uttarakhand.

Apart from this , JICA furnished Japanese ODA loans of 60 billion Yen (nearly INR. 4,000 Crore)  to the Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency (IREDA) in total of 2011 and 2014 under which above 36 sub-projects all over the wind, solar and small hydro energy segments has been sustained.

Further, in the context of energy competence, JICA furnished Japanese ODA loans of 90 billion Yen (nearly INR. 6,000 Crore) to Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) in total of 2008, 2011 and 2014 which sustained in excess of 5,000 sub-projects to enhane the energy competence of MSMEs in India.

This assistance by JICA has the capacity to reap rich dividends on a big scale, permitting a significant chunk of India’s industrial base to change to sustainable sources of energy.  As stated by Small & Medium Business Development Chamber of India, MSMEs presently contribute 45% of India’s industrial yield and 40% of total exports. SMEs form 95% of the total industrial units in the nation.

MSMEs use nearly 25% of energy used by the total manufacturing segment in India. However, MSMEs are usually slow in adopting energy saving techniques and consume energy in an incompetent way in contrast to big organisations. This is chiefly because of scarcity of access to medium-long term fiscal resources and expert knowledge. It is JICA’s goal to cope up woth these requirement gaps via targeted interventions.
About JICA

Founded, by a precise law, as an incorporated administrative institution under the Government of Japan, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) targets to donate to the enhancement of global cooperation, as a sole Japanese governmental agency in charge of ODA execution. JICA is the globe's biggest bilateral donor agency. JICA functions as a link between Japan and developing nations, and furnishes aids in forms of loan, grant and technical cooperation so that the developing nations can fortify their competence.
