Beyoncé Associates with UNICEF to Deliver Clean Water to Children in Distant Regions in Burundi, East Africa
NEW ORLEANS, June 30: Worldwide artist and philanthropist,
Beyoncé has joined forces with UNICEF by means of her BeyGOOD charitable wing to
reveal the commencement of BEYGOOD4BURUNDI, a multi-year alliance to deliver
clean water to the most susceptible children in Burundi, acknowledged as the
"Heart of Africa." The collaboration
will sustain programs to enhance water, cleanliness and elementary sanitation methods
in the toughest-to- access zones of the landlocked East African country, where almost
half the populace has no admittance to clean water.
The water catastrophe in Burundi is a predicament for
children. When children have to depend on unclean water, they become feeble, undernourished,
and vulnerable to water-borne ailments, which are among the foremost reasons of
death in children below five. So as to walk for miles in quest for wells, the deficiency
of water also compels children to miss out on school. The load of getting water
falls unreasonably on girls, who run the risk of assaults along their passages.
"Access to water is a fundamental right. When you give
children clean and safe water, you don't just give them life, you give them
health, an education, and a brighter future. I am committed to helping drive
lasting solutions to the water crisis in Burundi," revealed Beyoncé.
"Addressing the global water crisis is one of the
defining challenges of our time, and the children of Burundi are among the most
vulnerable," stated Caryl M. Stern, President and CEO of UNICEF USA,
adding, "This unique partnership combines UNICEF's decades of expertise in
providing clean water to children in Burundi and around the world with the
power and influence of the entertainment world to bring about social change. We
are grateful to Beyoncé and BeyGOOD for joining forces with UNICEF, to
highlight this critical issue to new audiences."
"BEYGOOD4BURUNDI is a continuation of the work that
Beyoncé, her family and Parkwood Entertainment are doing to address water
crises around the world, including right here in the state of Louisiana and in
Michigan," observed Ivy McGregor, Director of Philanthropy and Corporate
Relations at Parkwood Entertainment, who traveled to Burundi earlier this year,
adding, "In Burundi I saw myself, my sisters and my mother in the strength
of the women and young sisters travelling miles to carry water for their
families. Today young girls in the 'Heart of Africa' are given the gift of hope
for a brighter tomorrow through our multi-year partnership with UNICEF and
commitment to support safe water access solutions."
The opening stage of the collaboration comprises the formation
of new wells fortified with hand pumps, cleanliness teaching along with the enhancement
of water and cleanliness services in schools in four priority areas, comprising
Bukemba and Giharo in Rutana Province and Kinyinya and Nyabitsinda in Ruyigui
Province. In these rural societies, children are recurrently underfed and over
65 percent of the populace is utilizing unclean water sources. Children as well
as families have to tread long expanses to water gathering spots, and even then
the water admittance proportion is tremendously depleted.
