INC: Greater Nut Consumption May Aid Thwart Cognitive Decay in the Elderly

A new INC-financed research, published in Molecular Nutrition & Food Research, revealed that a high intake of nuts may assist in safeguarding the elderly from cognitive decay.
A group of researchers reviewed whether a diet high in nuts might assist in safeguarding age-related cognitive decay over a three-year span.
A number of 119 participants aged 65 and above with dementia were chosen from the InCHIANTI cohort, a representative population-based research of elderly residents of Chianti, Italy. Participants were chosen based on their nut ingestion: non-nut consumers and frequent nut eaters (≥2.9 g/day).
The exposure to nut was gauged at the commencement the research with an authoritative food frequency questionnaire or with an analytical equipment for the characterization of phenolic compounds. Besides, cognitive decay was gauged utilizing the Mini-Mental State Examination test.
Researchers discovered that, from 119 subjects, 38 participants experienced cognitive decay, 28 from the non-nut eaters group and 10 from the nut consumers squad. Nut ingestion anticipated either by the dietary marker or by the urinary marker model was in both cases linked  to lesser cognitive decay.
"The use of a panel of metabolites provides accurate and complementary information on nut exposure and reinforces the results obtained using dietary information," revealed Prof. AndrĂ©s-Lacueva, ICREA Academia at the University of Barcelona, Group leader of CIBERFES on Frailty and Healthy Aging and principal investigator of the study.
The research was backed by the INC.
