The Sambhal violence and rule of law

The violence in Sambhal in Uttar Pradesh is unfortunate considering the fact that it came against the backdrop of a court ruling that granted the Archaeological Survey of India to undertake a study to determine whether a temple existed on the premises of a mosque that was built by a foreign intruder several centuries ago. While the survey was taking place a group of miscreants attacked the team of surveyors that prompted the police to safeguard the officials from the agitated mob which was peeved with the administration's decision to give the go ahead for the survey to continue. The attackers pelted stones at the police with intense ferocity compelling the police to take stringent action in self defence. It is matter of grave concern that instead of relying on the court ordered survey to determine whether a temple existed or not those opposed to the court orders took the law in their hands and resorted to widespread violence. Such acts ought to be universally condemned and no one irrespective of one's religious identity should be allowed to resort to thwart the due process of law.The way the rampaging mob torched vehicles and allowed minors to be a part of the mayhem is indeed shocking. It is a matter of great regret that a leader of a particular political outwit warned that if such court verdicts continued to emanate the consequences for the country could be disastrous. It should be the fundamental duty of responsible politicians to deter the people concerned from indulging in intimidating acts that goes against the interest of the nation. It is greatly desirable that better sense should prevail among those who are firm on thwarting the evil designs of undesirable elements trying to foment trouble and fulfilling their devious agenda for narrow selfish gains. The time has come for all rational thinking people from all sections of society to give a befitting reply to those trying to put the unity of the country at peril. It is high time to rise above petty sectarian interests and condemn what is detrimental for the smooth progress of society and fortify our country from the action of unwanted subversive elements.
